Rhodotorula arctica sp. nov., a basidiomycetous yeast from Arctic soil

The three isolates of Rhodotorula arctica sp. nov are typified by JCM 13290T (= Pro94 Y29T = CBS 9278T = DBVPG 7841T). R. arctica differs from its only close relative, Bensingtonia yamatoana, by requiring thiamin and by failing to assimilate maltose and quinate but is most readily identified using the rDNA sequence of LSU D1/D2, GenBank AB478858 (differing from that of B. yamatoana at 4 positions), and the ITS sequence GenBank AB478857 (differing at 9 positions). One isolate, JCM 13292 (= Pro94 Y56 = CBS 9280 = DBVPG Y7843), is unique in requiring either L-arginine or L-citrulline as a source of nitrogen.
