Three strains of rod-shaped and motile lactic acid bacteria, NRIC 0736T, NRIC 0735, and NRIC 0737 were isolated from the sap obtained from two different trees of an oak (Quercus sp.) in Awashima Island in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. The three strains showed nearly identical similarities of 16S rRNA gene sequence (>99.7%). They showed low sequence similarities of 16S rRNA gene sequence to known species of lactic acid bacteria; high sequence similarities to NRIC 0736T were shown in Lactobacillus satsumensis NRIC 0604T (96.3%), Lactobacillus mali DSM 20444T (95.3%) and Lactobacillus vini DSM 20605T (95.3%), respectively. Levels of DNA-DNA relatedness revealed genotypic separation of the three isolates from the above the three species. Therefore, the three isolates represent a novel species, for which a name, Lactobacillus sucicola is proposed. The type strain is NRIC 0736T (=JCM 15457T, DSM 21376T).
